We are highlighting a few of our stallholders with a "behind the scenes" look into who they are and their creative journey. We hope you enjoy learning a bit about the humans behind the products.
Tell us a little about yourself and your creative journey…
My mum and I were drawn to starting Mako Design to connect with and learn more about te ao Māori, and also to do something creative and meaningful as a whānau. We are both very creative and ideas-driven, so having a Māori design business that gives us a creative outlet is super rewarding.
It is hugely important to us that we are doing this as a whānau, spending time together and that what we create and produce is empowering and helps people feel a connection to Māori culture. We want people to be proud of who they are and where they come from, so creating with that purpose is so fulfilling to us.
One of our biggest market highlights happened just recently. We were at a 2-day conference that had a small market set-up. On the first day we learnt that Dame Valerie Adams was going to be one of the speakers. Massive fan-girl moment! Well, after her talk, she came over to the market area and ended up buying several pairs of our earrings!! She was so lovely, she even posed for a photo and tagged us in one of her stories - what a legend!
We are looking forward to Encraftment and love so much about the market! It has such an amazing selection of local makers and small businesses, the team that run the market are incredible, and we just have the best time when we're there.
